Research Security

Safeguarding Research, Advancing Progress

Research security is about protecting the people, ideas, data, and discoveries that move research forward. As part of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP), the research security program through partnership, guidance, and proactive risk management, helps safeguard our research enterprise while enabling collaboration and innovation.

The University is required by federal and state regulations (NSPM-33, Texas SB 1565, and Texas HB 127) to have a research security office. The research security program is housed in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP), which is jointly administered by the University of Houston System Information Security Office.

NSPM- 33

The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) within the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) issued guidance in January 2022 for implementing National Security Presidential Memorandum 33 (NSPM-33). The guidance is intended to protect federally funded research from foreign interference and strengthen research security across the U.S. research community.
