The DOE, NIH and NSF have published research security training requirements.   

The condensed single-module Research Security Training (Combined) (ID 357579) course satisfies the current requirement for federal agencies (see below).

The University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) provides Research Security Training through CITI to meet federal requirements under the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022. Beginning in calendar year 2025, research security training requirements will be incorporated into applicable agency proposal and award requirements, with specific implementation dates varying by agency.

Under the Act, senior/key personnel must complete research security training within one year of an applicable grant or research application, and institutions must annually certify that required personnel have completed training that meets federal requirements.

Researchers may fulfill the requirement through either:

  2. Research Security Basic Training (4 Modules) - IDs 357580

Researchers are encouraged to complete the Combined course as soon as possible to establish a permanent record of completion.

 

Annual Refresher

The Research Security Training (Combined) Refresher, developed by the NSF SECURE Center, reinforces key concepts through updated information and case studies. The course takes approximately 30 minutes or less and meets the annual refresher requirement under the CHIPS and Science Act. UHD accepts this course as its required annual refresher.

To add courses, log in to CITI, select “View Courses,” and under “Learner Tools for University of Houston-Downtown,” select “Add a Course.” Under Question 11, “Research Security,” select the desired courses.

The four-module Research Security Training was developed by the National Science Foundation, while the Combined course was developed by the NSF SECURE Center and is expected to eventually replace the four-module version.
