Work from Home IT Security Guidelines

When working remotely, it’s critical to maintain strong cybersecurity practices to protect University data and resources. Please review and follow these guidelines:

Before You Begin Working from Home

  • Verify file access: Use OneDrive, departmental file shares, or other approved storage solutions.
  • Leave your office computer powered on and logged out if you may need remote access.
  • Test remote connectivity in advance to ensure you can connect when needed.
  • Update your password using the Online Password Reset Tool.

If Using a University-Owned Device

  • Connect via VPN to access University resources. (Not required for public websites.)
  • Run a full virus scan weekly to detect potential issues.
  • Report suspicious activity immediately to: security@uhd.edu
  • Prevent physical access by others to University equipment.
  • Comply with Level 1 data handling requirements per SAM 07.A.08.
  • Log out before stepping away from your computer.

If Using a Personally-Owned Device

  • Install and maintain antivirus software:
    • Windows 10 includes built-in protection.
    • Mac users can use Avast Free Mac Security (highly rated).
  • Run weekly virus scans.
  • Report suspicious activity to security@uhd.edu
  • Do NOT store Level 1 data on personal devices (SAM 07.A.08. compliance required).
  • Do NOT download enterprise system data (e.g., PeopleSoft) to personal devices.
  • Log out of University systems after completing work.
  • Transfer University records created on personal devices to University systems promptly.
