As industries and workforce expectations evolve, organizations are placing greater emphasis on professionals with specialized skill sets, interdisciplinary perspectives, and the ability to apply knowledge in real-world environments.
For more than 25 years, the University of Houston-Downtown’s (UHD) Marilyn Davies College of Business has maintained Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International accreditation, a globally recognized standard of excellence in business education, reflecting the university’s commitment to affordable, workforce-ready graduate education and professional certification.
Alongside its longstanding MBA program, UHD has continued expanding its portfolio of business-related master’s programs spanning fields such as strategic communication, artificial intelligence, data analytics, nonprofit management, and security management.
Across UHD’s graduate offerings, working students have access to flexible online and hybrid learning formats paired with applied coursework taught by faculty with real-world industry experience, allowing many professionals to strengthen their expertise or pivot into new career paths. That flexibility has continued expanding in recent years, including the launch of the university’s fully online MBA program designed for working professionals balancing graduate education alongside busy careers and personal responsibilities.
Recent MBA graduate Yemi Brown balanced graduate studies alongside work, volunteer leadership, and parenting while gaining professional experience through opportunities connected to UHD, including an internship that later developed into a full-time role within the energy industry. Brown said university resources like Career Services helped her build her professional network prior to graduation.
“You have to be willing to put in the work to get the benefits,” Brown said.
Launched in 2022, the university’s Master of Arts in Strategic Communication (MASC) program complements existing graduate offerings in technical communication and nonprofit management, highlighting the growing overlap between communication, leadership, and organizational strategy across both corporate and nonprofit sectors.
“We know employers look for communication professionals who value trust, compassion, and sound judgement,” Program Director Dr. Toni Hoang said. “The MASC program prepares students to analyze communication issues, work collaboratively, and create community engagement strategies that support a shared vision.”
Coursework within the program includes areas ranging from crisis and health communication to rhetoric and public affairs, while also emphasizing community engagement and organizational leadership. Together with the university's graduate offerings in nonprofit management and technical communication, the program reflects the increasing value organizations place on professionals who understand the intersection of communication, leadership, and organizational strategy.
Recent MASC graduate Faith Richards, now working as an assistant marketing manager, said the program’s blend of communication and leadership coursework aligned closely with the realities of her role.
“That experience translated directly into the work I do today as an assistant marketing manager, where I regularly work across teams, audiences, and business priorities to develop messaging and campaigns that are both strategic and adaptable.”
As organizations continue adapting to rapid technological change, UHD has also expanded graduate offerings focused on technology, security, and digital transformation. Programs including the Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (MSAI) and Master of Security Management reflect the increasing importance of professionals who can navigate emerging technologies and organizational risk.
“UHD’s MSAI program is designed to give students an advantage in AI careers by focusing on the skills employers are seeking,” said Dr. Hong Lin, Program Director and Professor of Computer Science and Engineering Technology. “With AI evolving so quickly, we often survey our students to ensure the program stays aligned with emerging industry needs and opportunities.”
Designed around applied learning, the program introduces students to areas such as machine learning, deep learning, robotics process automation, and computer vision, while also emphasizing communication and ethical decision-making.
MSAI student Timothy Williams said the program is helping support a transition into more advanced AI-focused cybersecurity and operational technology work.
“It is allowing me to transition from a traditional ‘alert processor’ to an AI supervisor and threat hunter. By mastering the logic behind AI-driven investigation engines, I can now oversee automated workflows, allowing me to focus on the complex contextualization required to secure the intersection of IT and Operational Technology.”
Additional graduate offerings in areas such as data analytics and professional accountancy help professionals strengthen specialized skill sets and expand the value they bring to organizations across a range of industries.
From strategic communication and nonprofit leadership to artificial intelligence and security management, UHD’s graduate offerings continue evolving alongside the industries they serve. Through flexible learning formats, applied coursework, and faculty with real-world industry experience, the university continues to equip graduate students with the skills and adaptability needed in today’s workforce.
