Bachelor of Sciences in Geosciences With Environmental Geology
Bachelor of Sciences in Geosciences with a concentration in Environmental Geology program at the University of Houston-Downtown provides a strong foundation in geology, and environmental science, preparing students to understand and address environmental challenges. The curriculum combines classroom instruction with hands-on laboratory and field experiences to develop both scientific knowledge and practical skills.
Graduates are well prepared for careers in environmental consulting, natural resource management, geoscience, and related fields, as well as for graduate study. Students benefit from small class sizes, faculty mentoring, modern laboratories, and opportunities to participate in research, and field experiences.
Program Learning Outcomes
- PLO1: Problem Solving: Graduates will be able to carry out independent project-based activities, using geological observations and data to solve a problem.
- PLO2: Basic Knowledge: Graduates will have the basic knowledge of their curriculum, including elements of mineralogy, petrology, stratigraphy, and plate tectonics.
- PLO3: Laboratory Skills: Graduates will have laboratory skills common to modern laboratories, particularly in the use of a Brunton compass and a petrographic microscope.

- Continuing students at UHD must have
- a UHD GPA of 2.0 or higher,
- earned at least 24 college-level semester credit hours,
- have a C or better in MATH 1301 or (MATH 1302, MATH 1404, MATH 1505, MATH 2401, MATH 2402 or MATH 2403), and
- have credit or enrollment in ENG 1302
- Students transferring to UHD must have
- a GPA of 2.0 or higher,
- earned at least 24 college-level semester credit hours,
- have a C or better in MATH 1301 or (MATH 1302, MATH 1404, MATH 1505, MATH 2401, MATH 2402 or MATH 2403), and
- have credit or enrollment in ENG 1302
- Freshmen who meet the Freshman Admissions criteria to UHD and the following criteria
will be declared upon admission
- a GPA of 2.0 or higher,
- earned at least 24 college-level semester credit hours,
- have a C or better in MATH 1301 or (MATH 1302, MATH 1404, MATH 1505, MATH 2401, MATH 2402 or MATH 2403), and have credit or enrollment in ENG 1302
